Day 5: Pineapple Plantation, Transfer to Arenal Thursday, October 10 \

Organic Pineapple Farms

Pineapple farming has become a key player in Costa Rica's economic growth. Over the
last decade, the land used for pineapple production has increased by more than 300
percent, positioning it as the second most significant export after bananas,
surpassing coffee. This booming industry is projected to generate around 135,000
jobs, positively impacting about 550,000 people.

To grow organic pineapples, farmers start with the crowns of healthy plants. They enrich
the soil with organic matter and cover it with large plastic sheets, punctured every
two feet for planting the crowns. They also manage irrigation and weeds while adhering
to organic farming practices and monitoring for pests and diseases. Each pineapple plant
can produce an extra sprout for planting in the following year, and maintaining a clean
farm is essential, with any diseased plants promptly removed.

When buying pineapples, look for an organic seal and choose those that are green.
Despite various challenges, over 18,500 acres of pineapple farms in Costa Rica have received
certification. These farms prioritize environmental sustainability by reducing agrochemical
use, preventing soil erosion and water pollution, managing waste responsibly, and protecting
wildlife habitats. Workers on certified farms undergo comprehensive safety training and
are provided with necessary protective equipment. Some organic farms are fully Costa
Rican-owned and certified by BCS Öko-Garantie GmbH for both European and North American
markets, in addition to local certifications.
